GYN & OBS

Gynecology is the care of a woman’s reproductive organs and health. Obstetrics involves the treatment of pregnant women, including the delivery of babies. Obstetrician gynecologists play a critical role in women’s healthcare. In fact, an OB/GYN may be the only doctor that many young women see on a regular basis.

Procedures

Sometimes further evaluation of a GYN issue is necessary, so your doctor may recommend that you have a procedure or surgery. The following are common GYN procedures and surgeries our physicians perform:

• Adhesiolysis
  This is also called lysis of adhesions. Cutting of adhesions (scar tissue).
• Cervical (Cone) Biopsy
• Colporrhaphy
  Surgical repair of the vaginal wall. It is used to repair enteroceles (hernias).
• Colposcopy
• Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
• Endometrial Ablation
• Endometrial or Uterine Biopsy
• Fluid-Contrast Ultrasound (FCUS)
  This procedure is an adaptation of a standard pelvic ultrasound. It is used to evaluate the lining of the uterus and the uterine cavity. It can measure the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium) and reveal the texture of its surface and any abnormalities such as polyps or fibroids. A small catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterus and an ultrasound wand is placed in the vagina. A sterile solution is slowly injected through the catheter into the uterine cavity and the area is imaged with the ultrasound.

• Pelviscopy (Pelvic Laparoscopy)
• Selective Salpingography
  This X-ray test is used to identify fallopian tube disease or obstructions. A fine catheter is passed into the fallopian tube, then dye is injected to look for abnormalities or obstructions. Occasionally, the pressure of the dye may be all that is needed to open a blocked fallopian tube. If not, a wire guide canalization or transcervical balloon tuboplasty can be performed during a salpingography test.

  Surgical removal of the cervix (but not the rest of the uterus). A radical trachelectomy is the removal of the cervix and surrounding tissue, along with some pelvic lymph nodes.
