Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove fat deposits from under the skin in order to shape the body. The fat is removed with a vacuum-suction canola, a medical device that looks similar to a hollow pen. Unless liposuction is medically indicated for a condition such as removing lipomas (fat tumors), it is considered to be cosmetic surgery and not usually covered by medical insurance. The surgery may be done in a doctor’s office, surgical center or hospital, and depending on the procedure, under general, regional, or local anesthesia. Your doctor will make a small incision in the area to be liposuctioned, and the fat and liquid collected from your body will be monitored carefully to ensure a proper fluid balance is maintained in your body. A drainage tube may be inserted temporarily to drain fluid away from the wound. Your doctor will advise you regarding special garments to be worn to keep your skin compressed, and the level of activity that is safe for you after surgery. Liposuction results may not be permanent, and if weight is gained, fat may return to where you had the liposuction or to other sites on the body.
